REVIEW:
Madame Sousou is a fair take on a Parisien bistro: marble compound tiled flooring, a dominating long panelled bar, wooden tables and bentwood chairs, with waiters in long aprons cruising the tables. The difference being that it doesn't act like a confident bistro during its all day opening, feeling decidedly cafe-like before dressing up for dinner. Paper serviettes and slow staff - hesitant to handle you as diners even once you've ordered serious food and wine - and the odd diversion into loud music detract.
But serious food indeed. A French-leaning menu yields some very fine results - artfully presented and refined in flavour, this is serious stuff and redeems the cafe approach.
Nightfall sees Madame Sousou come into itself, more comfortable with dressed tables and more confident service matching the lovely food. Rated on this it could almost gain anotehr point.
The respectable wine list covers a good selection of Australian, French and the odd Italian but the starting point is not low, making the BYO option attractive.
