REVIEW:
Nigel Slater is a fine writer on food, his books getting better over the years with Toast a great read and now Kitchen Diaries a further testament to his love of fine food and good cooking. It documents, in simple format, what he cooks at home throughout the year. Using ingredients from his own kitchen garden, from farmers markets, organic deliveries, and even supermarkets, he throws together quick snacks through to full-on dinner parties. It's a simple approach but shows how good food at home is not a daunting task, simply one of creative thinking and keeping a good larder. I might note that he calls April and May "summer", and often buys things out of season but a lot of produce in the England must be shipped in from warmer climes. But it's easy to forgive these quirks for his genial and easily read discourse on a year in his kitchen. the tale is entertaining and the recipes approachable and easy to achieve. This book will provoke the home cook in you to think and plan your pantry and add a little more effort to achieve great results in your own home cooking. A delight to read.
