The Yarra Valley was one of the first combined food & wine baskets of Australia, providing a virtual cornucopia of produce to the city of Melbourne in the nineteenth century. Now, within an hour's drive from central Melbourne and recognised as one of the premium wine producing areas of Australia, the Yarra Valley is again alive, not only with wine, but with artisinal and premium food produce that is the envy of other areas.
This is a fabulous area that can even be accessed by a day trip, although relaxing and spending time in this beautiful and varied valley is worth every moment you can spare.
"On a sunny morning, when you're driving through the Yarra Valley and the far pavilions of the Great Divide are rising blue and mysterious, you want to live forever.

There are many claimants for the title of God's Own Country, but our own green valley is probably as close as you'll get in Australia. It's rich in beauty and history, but most importantly, it's rich in terroir, that mystical combination of soil, climate and culture that nurtures good wine and food.

The river flats and gentle foothills have been an important part of Australia's wine industry since Victoria's first vineyard was planted here in 1837. Recognising that wine is unfulfilled without food, and that wine and food call for somewhere to rest, the Yarra Valley is now a total package centre for the good life.

The valley is broad and comfortably houses 2500 hectares of vines, most of which have grown up in the past couple of decades. There's still plenty of land left, and pundits say the valley will eventually divide into smaller appellations, much like California's Sonoma and Napa valleys."

Until it was devastated by phylloxera in the 19th century, Victoria was Australia's largest wine-producing state and, to a large extent, the Yarra Valley was where it was at. Now the region has gone full circle and then some, producing world-famous wines, often under difficult circumstances.

The climate in the valley is predictably unpredictable - it will never be consistently hot, cold, dry, wet, still or windy. It has pockets of microclimate, leading to late vintages and relatively low volumes. However, quality is invariably high, justifying the big tickets that many producers put on their wines."
